Spring Musical Sneak Peek: Once Upon A Mattress

Anna Lee '16, Features Section Editor

Giving an unexpected twist to a classical fairytale, Once Upon a Mattress combines elements of fantasy and magic with hints of comedy and heaps of love set in 15th century Europe. All 23 members of the cast come from all four grades, creating bonds and memories in an open environment. As the cast members work tirelessly to perfect their lines and dances, the crew is building beautiful sets that resonate with not only the 15th century royal court in Europe, but also with the audience. The production assistants diligently show up at each practice, dedicated to making this production the best it can be.

Kimia Simab, Marymount’s Performing Arts Coordinator and a senior who has been part of the Marymount Players all four years of her high school years, reveals the best aspect of her experience not only in this musical, but throughout her entire performing arts career. She shares that, “it is so beautiful that a bunch of high school girls have the ability to tell a story in an elegant and unique way. Participating in the plays and musicals is not only super fun, but it also teaches the importance of focus, energy commitment, and most importantly, teamwork.” When asked about how she balances her academic workload with the rehearsal practices, she answers, “Although it can get hectic with school work and all, I look forward to attending rehearsal every day . . . [and] being a part of the Marymount Players for the past four years has truly made my high school experience.”

Perhaps the most magical part of it all is that Kimia’s experience resonates with all members of cast and crew, and inevitably spreads to the audience. So please don’t miss out on this exceptional production!
