Anchors Away!

Musings from the Senior Editorial Staff

Clara Lacey- Editor-in-Chief

1- What’s been your favorite part about The Anchor?

  • My favorite part of The Anchor has been getting to know so many amazing people– from the staff writers across all grades, the dedicated Editorial Board, the awesome rising Editor-in-Chief Amber Wall, and, of course, the amazing moderator Ms. Hazell-O’Brien.

2- What’s your favorite article this year? Why?

  • My favorite article this year was Elle Lavin’s opinion piece “Our Culture is Not a Costume”, covering cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes. It was very genuine, well-written, and made an impact in informing conversation on campus.

3- What will you miss most about The Anchor?

  • I will most miss our first staff meetings for each issue. I love hearing writers propose their ideas and get really excited about writing articles for The Anchor.

4- Give us one piece of advice for next year’s Board.

  • Don’t be afraid to write about whatever you think is important, but remember that good journalism tackles the controversial in a balanced and respectful way.

Hyewon Lee- Arts & Entertainment Editor

1- What’s been your favorite part about The Anchor?

  • I loved how The Anchor allowed us to voice our diverse interests, thoughts, and opinions through our writing. If you are interested in sports, you can write an exciting article about the upcoming track season. If you are interested in arts, you can share a list of your favorite museums. The Anchor allows us to be who we are and gives us the opportunity to showcase it to the rest of the school.

2- What’s your favorite article this year? Why?

  • The HOMLAs are always my favorite because I think they capture the Marymount community in a fun, casual way that makes me want to meet all the featured individuals.

3- What will you miss most about The Anchor?

  • I will miss seeing Ms. Hazell-O’Brien during lunch every Monday and talking about ways to make each issue filled with creative articles.

4- Give us one piece of advice for next year’s Board.

  • Communication is key! Make sure to keep in contact with staff writers during their writing process in order to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Let them know that you are available to help them!

1- What’s been your favorite part about The Anchor?

  • I have loved taking photos for The Anchor, especially HOMLA. Working on HOMLA sort of forced me to come out of my shell Junior year and actually talk to a bunch of strangers and some not-so strangers, that I’d normally be absolutely terrified and intimidated to talk to.

2- What’s your favorite article this year? Why?

  • My favorite article of this year was actually probably the Summer playlist one that I wrote with Ally for the final issue. I asked a bunch of my friends for help finding the perfect songs for each playlist and we all sat around listening to music and it was just really chill and fun to make.

3- What will you miss most about The Anchor?

  • I’ll miss the work, mostly. I’ll miss getting to read pieces on the latest drama written as unbiasedly as possible and getting to see just how talented my classmates are. They never cease to amaze me.

4- Give us one piece of advice for next year’s Board.

  • Your deadlines are concrete. Don’t miss your deadlines everyone will hate you!

Clare Cooper- Athletics Editor

1- What’s been your favorite part about The Anchor?

  • My favorite part has been all the people I have met through The Anchor, since you are able to meet people from all different grades. I especially love this year’s Editorial Board because it consists of such an amazing and talented group of girls, and I can call several of them my closest friends.

2- What’s your favorite article this year? Why?

  • One of my favorite articles was “Behind the Buses” because although many bus drivers have been with Marymount for several years, I did not know much about them, but this article allowed me to learn more about several of these bus drivers.
  • My favorite article that I wrote this year was the “Los Angeles Destinations to Get in the Christmas Spirit” because I am a HUGE Christmas fan and it was so much fun researching places to go, actually visiting those locations, and then writing about my experience!

3- What will you miss most about The Anchor?

  • I am going to miss being part of such a welcoming environment that is open to everyone at Marymount and encourages people to speak their minds. The Anchor has allowed me to express my ideas about fun topics and read many other creative stories. I am also going to miss the guidance of Mrs. Hazell O’Brien since she is the best moderator that anyone could ever ask for.

4- Give us one piece of advice for next year’s Board.

  • I think it is easy to get caught up in your job as an editor, but don’t let this interfere with you writing articles because writing the articles is one of the best parts of being on The Anchor! Also, cherish the people you are working with because everyone is extremely compassionate and talented!
