On Saturday September 27, 2014, thirty-six Marymount students attended the first Model United Nations conference of the year at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in southern Orange County. Preparation began the first week of the school year, and the MUN program has been meeting twice a week since then. Students worked hard to research topics ranging from Nuclear Proliferation and Cyber Terrorism to Climate Change and Biodiversity, and represented a wide array of countries including Bolivia, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, and North Korea. The morning of the conference, they all arrived at Marymount at 6:30am, dressed in stylish black suits, and boarded the bus to Santa Margarita. The conference began at nine o’clock and lasted until the awards ceremony at 3:15. During the day, delegates gave speeches, discussed their topics, and collaborated with one another to write resolutions to effectively solve their countries’ issues. They competed against more than one thousand delegates from several high schools across California and were ultimately extremely successful, winning a record number of twenty-three awards for 64% of Marymount’s delegation. The awards consisted of two advanced outstanding awards, six advanced commendations, a non-freshman novice outstanding award, eight non-freshman commendations, two freshman outstanding awards, and four freshman commendations. Congratulations to all of the students that participated!
