First Ever Global Community Week Hits Marymount

As students piled into Pavilion to see the volleyball net still up from morning practice, some seemed nervous, some excited, and some just outright confused. However, as everyone realized that there would be a volleyball game between the students and faculty, the entire community exploded with fervor and adrenaline. As students correctly answered global questions about the world left and right, two teams soon formed and began battling against each other using a plastic beach ball made to look like a globe; screams from the benches got louder and louder! The teachers won the game and kept the world afloat much to the students’ dismay. However, it was overall extremely exciting to athletically test the knowledge of our student body regarding global issues, as our world is interconnected now more than ever.

Following this exhilarating activity, global community week slowed the pace down with an International Prayer for Peace. Students from different cultures, backgrounds, and languages came up to say the prayer about empowering women in the world in various languages.

It was beautiful to see the community come together and experience the power of prayer. Afterwards, celebrating such diversity within Marymount, many clubs on campus brought international cuisine out onto Senior Lawn, while the performing arts department brought international music and dance. Many students relished the delicious empanadas or baklavas while watching student performances.

Global Community Week truly brought the diversity of the world onto campus through our engaging activities and cultured food. Hopefully, this first-ever event will become a tradition at Marymount as students celebrate the several ways in which we are linked across the globe.
