Superbowl Sunday Celebrations

Sadie McMillan '18, Staff Writer

Super Bowl Sunday is a special time during the year when families and friends throughout the country come together to enjoy a classic American sport, football; this year, the NFL celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl. (Fun fact: for the first time this year, the NFL terminated the use of roman numerals because viewers were unfamiliar with the larger numbers.)

People celebrate Super Bowl Sunday in many ways: eating food, dressing up in costumes, or making bets on who will win.

This is one of the few times in the year when people indulge themselves in a buffet style meal—nachos, chicken wings, dipping sauces, pizza and chili. In fact, the Super Bowl happens to be the event of the second largest food consumption in the United States just after Thanksgiving!

Bets on who the winner will be consist of buying squares and drawing numbers, where the winners are decided after the scores of each quarter; this happens to be a game of luck. As for costumes, some people are very spirited and paint their faces, chests, or wear crazy colored wigs.

One of the best and most popular parts of the Super Bowl is the the halftime show, where our favorite artists perform the top hits of the year. This year’s halftime show consisted of Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars.

Another Super Bowl favorite is the hilarious commercials that keep viewers hooked on watching the entire game.

The Super Bowl brings the 2016 football season to an end, with the Denver Broncos beating the Carolina Panthers 24-10. In the coming year, our city of Los Angeles will have the Rams returning to LA, so that should be something to look forward to!
