Offseason/ Preseason Sports: What do athletes do to stay in shape?

Megan Mika '17, Staff Writer

Staying in shape can be fun with some friends, great music, and an exciting change of scenery.

Marymount athletes find 45-minute runs on the beach both beneficial to their bodies and a good distraction from the stresses of school. 5-10 minutes of abs every day also helps tone the tummy. Yoga is another great way Marymount athletes stay in shape: it strengthens your core, releases endorphins that make you happy, releases tensions, and helps you clear your mind and relax.

Pilates and hiking are also great ways to exercise all parts of your body while making memories with friends in the great outdoors. Going to the gym with your Sailor Sisters is also a great way to stay fit. Hitting the treadmill and lifting weights provides awesome results. Some Sailors have found that bumping a pump-up playlist while working out helps pass the time.

Eating healthy is also super important. It is a great way to stay in shape, but it also makes you feel better and perform at a higher level during school. Marymount girls like the Whole Foods Juices because they are all natural and raw; eating foods in its most natural form is a great way to know that what you are putting into your body is healthy. If you’re looking to get hooked on healthy eating, try out Whole Foods, Kreation or Pressed Juicery. (My personal favorite juice is the Ginger lemon juice).

Sleep is a secret ingredient to staying in shape. It provides the best form of nourishment for your body and actually burn calories. It is essential for brain function during the day, to make sure your body is rested for physical activities. Fun fact: it also clears your skin!

If you are a Marymount athlete hoping to get in some extra fitness, try the workouts with Coach S on Monday and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 for general conditioning. Coach S also teaches PE classes during periods 1, 3, 5, 4, and 6, which are always open to EVERYONE. If none of those times work for you, Coach S is also available during Lunch or Period 9 upon request. So stop on by with a positive attitude and get ready to feel fit and healthy!
