Far East Plaza: A Chinatown Food Heaven

Kristiane Alphson '17, Staff Writer

Chinatown’s Far East Plaza is food court turned enchanting, cultural, and reborn. For many years, it was viewed as nothing more than an eclectic and run down shopping center. However, this reputation shifted mostly because of businessman Alvin Cailan, who tripled-down on the Chinatown plaza through the opening of the prestigious restaurants Unit 120 and Amboy.

In addition, “visionary” George Yu, who is executive director of the Chinatown Business Improvement District, has made extreme impacts within the Chinatown community and the growth of the Far East Plaza. Yu wishes to maintain the small business feel of the Far East Plaza, while inspiring growth of restaurants at an affordable price. New tenants of the plaza express that manageable rents and future potential drew their attention, in addition to the romance of Chinatown’s history and culture, which truly sealed the deal. Tenants also mention the diversity of people that roam through the plaza; ranging from all ages and ethnicities, people are being drawn to the budding culture spot.

The Far East Plaza is accessible and easy via public transportation. Chinatown expert and Marymount Physics teacher, Mr. Eadon, lends his advice on the easy route to enter this budding phenomenon. He advises one to take the expo line to Union Station and the Gold Line one stop to Chinatown- in which you can walk through Blossom Plaza to Broadway, and left to the Far East Plaza. If you are looking for an easily accessible cultural experience with delicious food and rich history, the Far East Plaza is awaiting you.
