Warm Up with Holiday Cookies and Drinks

During winter, the air cools even in Los Angeles, cozy clothes reappear, and holiday decorations come out of the attic. Schoolwork dwindles down in preparation for winter vacation. The colder weather makes it bearable to turn on the kitchen oven, and the school break means there’s time for baking special cookies for friends. Holiday cookies and beverages are a great way to usher in the holiday season by making something nice for others.

Spicy Cocoa and Chocolate Cookies

Hot cocoa is a favorite drink. Just heat a pot of milk on the stove and mix in your favorite cocoa mix. For a little history and French cuisine, try Coco Chanel’s and Marcel Proust’s favorite brand, Angelina. To spice things up, toss in a pinch of cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Bake some chocolate cookies with a teaspoon of cayenne to double up on the chocolate heat.

Peppermint Milkshakes and Cranberry Biscotti

On a warm Los Angeles winter’s day, enjoy cold holiday drinks like peppermint milkshakes. Blend vanilla ice cream, two peppermint candy canes, and a drop of red food coloring. Top off with whipped cream and crushed candy cane. For the cookies, take a basic biscotti recipe, mix in dried cranberries, and after baking drizzle with melted white chocolate.

Mulled Cider and Gingerbread Men

The best fruits may ripen in summer, but fall brings harvests of apples and pears. Fill the house with sweet holiday aromas by heating a pot of apple or pear cider. All it takes is four cups of cider, three orange slices, three cinnamon sticks, and a quarter cup of mulling spices tied in a cheesecloth heated for ten minutes. Pour into cups, and dunk the feet of your gingerbread men.
