During this 2013 fall sports season, Marlborough has been eagerly awaiting their opportunity to face off against the Sailor volleyball squad. Prior to the Marymount vs. Marlborough Match on Thursday, October 17, Marlborough created a Facebook event, inviting people from the community to come and support their team because they knew they would need all the help they could get while battling Marymount. Marymount has beaten Marlborough the past 10 years in a row, and the Mustangs believed that this was their year to finally break the streak. However, Marymount’s volleyball team would not give in. As the Mustangs walked onto Pavilion Court, they took aim and tried to sink the Sailors; Marlborough was filled with energy and waiting to pounce. With the ring of the whistle, the Sailors and the Mustangs shook hands, starting the highly anticipated game.

As the match commenced, the crowd began to shout at the top of their lungs and wave their pom-poms, stimulating competitive feelings on both sides of the court. With set one at hand, the Mustangs showed their enthusiasm and determination, but it was not enough to defeat the Marymount varsity team. The score of the first set ended 25-22. Nevertheless, the question remained: Would Marymount be able to hold the momentum of their first win? The Sailors answered that question by smoothly sailing over Marlborough at 25-18 in the second set. However, the third set contained a rocky sea; the Mustangs remained neck-and-neck with the Sailors and tied the match at 22-22. All of the sudden, Marlborough responded with two aces, making it set point against Marymount. The Sailors were not going to throw the season away by losing to Marlborough, so they stopped the Mustangs’ streak at 23-24. The varsity squad once again replied to Marlborough’s pressure with ease and consistency. Marlborough and Marymount had seven set points, all of which could have gone either way, but the sailors were determined to send Marlborough home as quickly as possible. With a tough ending point, the Sailors were victorious over the Mustangs at 31-29!

In their display of relentless effort in this match, the Sailors proved that this season they are giving it their all. Student and faculty support is always appreciated as Sunshine League continues and Marymount heads into CIF’s. Go Sailors!
