Up and rising: Female Empowerment Club

Valentina Povolo '16, Staff Writer

This year, Marymount had over 30 clubs present at the annual Club Fair. There are so many great topics to explore from film to community service; the multitude of activities is enough to keep us busy the entire year.

One club that has just started this year is the Female Empowerment Club. To get an inside look at this club’s meetings, I spoke with the club presidents, seniors Annabelle Liljegren and Anna Eisenman.

What does a normal club meeting look like?

We haven’t held a club meeting yet, but we hope that the club will provide a comfortable environment for open discussion.

How did you come up with the idea for the club?

We came up with the idea for the club when we observed a lack of discussion about women’s rights at Marymount. We want to educate and inform the community about issues regarding women in the world today and learn how to be productive advocates.

What will you be discussing in the club?

We will be providing articles and materials that will guide the discussions, but we also encourage members to contribute as well. In the club, we will explore topics such as gender, sexuality, intersectional feminism, and women’s rights in the world today.

When do you meet?

We meet on select Mondays at lunch in Ms. Dickey’s room.

What fun things are happening this semester through the club?

We hope to participate in events in our community as well as hold some informative events at school this semester.

What is the goal of the club?

The goal is to create an all-inclusive environment where everyone can share and openly discuss what women are facing in the world today.
