Get Crafty Over the Holidays

Christine Gemperle '17, Staff Writer

As a member of the Crafts Club, I have been having so much fun going to regular meetings at lunch to participate in making fun and creative crafts corresponding with the holidays. On November 13th, I interviewed Clare Burgess and Kate Wegleitner, founders of the Crafts Club, to find out a little more about their individual interests and what Crafts Club members will be making during the holidays.

What is your favorite kind of craft to make for Thanksgiving/Christmas?

  • Kate: Well I recently got into knitting, which is really cool because you can make your own clothes. I’m working on a fuzzy scarf right now.

What kinds of crafts is the Crafts Club making today?

  • Clare: Since Thanksgiving is coming up we have a special Thankful Pumpkin project. Basically, you cut out strips of orange paper and write words you are thankful for on them, staple the bottom and tops of them together, and manipulate the strips to look like a three-dimensional pumpkin.
  • Kate: We also have materials to make friendship bracelets as always. They’re fun, easy, and always a hit.

Where do you get ideas for what crafts to make?

  • Kate: Usually, I go on Pinterest, they have a lot of cool ideas on there.
  • Clare: Yeah, Pinterest and other online sites too, there are so many DIY (do it yourself) options on the Internet and we usually don’t have trouble coming up with ideas.

What ideas do you have for what Christmas crafts to make?

  • Kate: We were thinking Gingerbread houses, but since there are so many people in the club, we always have to take cost into consideration. Many cool arts and crafts ideas are out of the question because we can’t buy material for everyone, but in this case, we are going to bring graham crackers for the houses instead of typical gingerbread stuff.
  • Clare: Another thing we might do is make mini sleighs out of candy canes, that would be cute, or paper snowflakes, which are cool because you can basically make it look however you want.

Hopefully this gave you better insight as to what the Crafts Club is all about. There are so many fun things to do and learn at each meeting and food is usually provided as well! To partake in these fun activities, contact either Kate Wegleitner or Clare Burgess to join the club! (emails are listed below).
