Grandparents Day 2015

Laurel Wholihan '16, Staff Writer

On Tuesday November 24th, grandfathers, grandmothers, and other special friends visited Marymount to spend time with their Sailors. While some had never been to campus before, a few grandmothers were Marymount graduates themselves.

The afternoon began with a mass celebrated in Pavilion, led in part by the Campus Ministry team. Students and relatives especially enjoyed watching the hula-themed communion meditation dance performed by the Dance I class.

After mass concluded, everyone moved towards Sophomore Courtyard for a Sage Dining lunch. A variety of sandwiches were served including turkey and caprese, accompanied by fruit, chips, and freshly baked cookies. Everyone enjoyed each other’s company dining outside in the beautiful weather, as many relatives had recently left snowy conditions in other parts of the country. Inside, grandparents perused tables of books that they could donate in their granddaughter’s name to the library. At the end of the lunch hour, grandparents made their way back to the parking lot, exchanging hugs with their granddaughters before they left – the conclusion of a lovely afternoon.

Grandparents’ Day is a wonderful Marymount tradition that, since it is celebrated so closely to Thanksgiving, reminds us to be grateful for all of our family and friends who love and support us. Both Sailors and their relatives are already looking forward to next year’s gathering.
