The Mental Health Awareness Debuts at Marymount

Evie Antholis '16, Staff Writer

The Mental Health Awareness Club seeks to demystify mental illness for those in the Marymount community. There are two main purposes of this club: the first is to organize a speaker series on mental illness in alliance with UCLA’s the Friends of the Semel Institute. The second, which will take up the majority of the club meetings’ time, is to educate one another about mental illness and the stigma often associated with it through educational videos and other media such as movies and TV. We will learn about anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and eating disorders so that when we encounter such illnesses in our lives, either in ourselves or in others, we can react with understanding and help those battling with mental illness to find the help they need. We must take steps toward a more tolerant, understanding world that is aware of the presence of mental illness and is dedicated to solving both the global and personal issues that surround the issue, and we aim to take our first steps in the Marymount community. If you have a hankering for advocacy and increased knowledge of the human mind, then this club is for you!
