Dance Review: Lost Love

Lost Love is a captivating trio performed by Briar Nolet, Devon Brown, and Myles Erlick from the Canadian Dance Company and choreographed by Natasha Louis. I simply couldn’t take my eyes off of it and was left at the edge of my seat not wanting it to end; I wasn’t surprised it won second place in the Senior Contemporary Duo/Trio category at The Dance Awards New York 2015. It deserved this win because it displayed Briar, Devon, and Myles’s beautiful mastery of precision, musicality, and emotion. They move to all the instruments in the music while playing with the timing, moving fast and slow. The choreography is a piece of art that conveys a powerful story of a spirit (lost love) trying to pull a girl away from her current boyfriend who may be bad news. Briar especially carries out the emotion within the story through her facial expressions and movement. She looks as if she were conflicted and pained to leave her boyfriend by using resistance while dancing. Her emotion is shown through every step she takes. Myles, the guy in white, is somewhat lacking in emotion and character; he has a monotone face and doesn’t do anything spectacular. However, Devon, the guy in black, is amazing and tells the story through his lifts and movements with Briar. The choreography, including many lifts, requires great technique and strength. In one lift, personally my favorite part, Briar jumps off Myles and flies above Devon’s head. Devon catches her in a lift called a bird’s nest, throws her up, and catches her before she hits the floor. This partnerwork between Devon and Briar is spectacular and made me breathless with suspense. Lastly, even in such an artistic piece, the dancers’ technique is evident. Each time Briar takes a step, her feet are turned out and are pointed every time they leave the floor. She moves through her plié (bent knees), but hyperextends her knees in all extensions and leaps. She also has amazing control and balance, so she never falls out of a turn. Lost Love is an enthralling dance that everyone should definitely go watch!
