My Free Period Confessional

My Free Period Confessional

Grace Gruber '18, Staff Writer

To all of you readers out there:

My name is Grace Gruber, and I will admit to you all that I am not always on task during my free period. Some of you may be shocked to hear that, but it is true. I usually try to get all of my homework done during my free period because of my ridiculous sports schedule after school. Though, when I have all my homework done, and some extra time remains before the period ends, that is where the trouble begins.

Fifteen minutes remain in the free period. Commonly, I would ask myself, “What should I do? Where should I go?” One apparent thought comes to my head: the Internet, also known as the ever-expanding time waster that houses a beautiful website titled Netflix. Unfortunately, Netflix is blocked at school. Since it’s free period, students can visit whatever websites they wish, as long as the websites are not blocked. Usually in this order, these are my favorite websites to visit in my spare time:

First, and foremost: ESPN FC. For those of you that do not know, I play soccer. I watch soccer. I track soccer. I read articles about soccer. I like soccer, okay? ESPN FC remains the place where I always go for soccer news first because 1) they have a whole website dedicated to soccer, and 2) they are a very reliable sports website within every sport for delivering news. I will confess, I waste way too much time on this website. Sooner or later, I either get bored of this website, or I run out of articles to read to I move on.

The next few websites I browse during my internet spree are usually Daily Mail, Huffington Post, or some other news website. This is where I read actual news, like headlines and the weather–– shocking, I know. Daily Mail, however, has more pictures in the articles then anything else; it feels more like a photo album than a newspaper. Typically, the pictures are huge, so I can usually get through the website quickly.

If time still remains, I usually do what most girls do first (or second, if checking the cell phone goes first): online shopping. Online window-shopping is one of my favorite activities because I love looking at clothes and trying to figure out ways to incorporate new pieces into my closet. My favorite website to look at is Lululemon because their clothing is extremely cute, comfortable and they add new clothes to their website every week! I also love looking at Banana Republic, J. Crew, Free People, and Urban Outfitters. In addition to clothing, I love browsing purses and makeup. It consistently makes me dream of the bags that I would want to own. And in terms of makeup, Sephora is my heaven, but remains the grave for my wallet (more like my mom’s actually). Sephora has just about everything I need, ranging from face washes to foundation, and nail polish to mascara; however, I do not buy all my beauty products from there. Long story short, while browsing Sephora, I look to expand upon my current collection of makeup – purchasing more shades or styles of products I already own, and wasting a fair amount of my free period. As for shopping, that is about it.

Would I do all of this in fifteen minutes? Of course not, but it’s a glimpse of what I attempt to do at the end my free period. Most of my Internet visits are productive, but productive in different ways. To the readers: thank you for reading my confessional, and I promise I am always on task during class.
