Move over Lionel Richie; Hello, Adele! Adele’s chart topping song “Hello” from her new album 25 was released with critical acclaim on October 23rd after three years off the music grid. “Hello” has been just what many fans were waiting for, showcasing her soulful, haunting voice and emotional lyrics that draw in many listeners.

“Hello” opens with a simple piano piece followed by Adele’s comeback lyric, “Hello.” Throughout the song, Adele approaches each verse with a question asking, “Hello, how are you?” and “I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet?” The listener follows Adele as if they are on the other end of the phone call. She goes on to express her remorse for letting so much time pass and her fears that she and the person on the other end “are running out of time.” She starts the chorus by singing “Hello from the other side,” and then later continues to say “Hello from the outside,” leading us to believe that she feels like an outsider in a once strong relationship. Although she is willing to call, the other person doesn’t care enough to even pick up the phone.

In numerous interviews, Adele explains how the song isn’t about an ex-boyfriend but rather herself and her relationship with everyone in her life post fame. In an interview with E News, she discussed how “Hello” is about “hurting someone’s feelings but it’s also about trying to stay in touch with [herself], which sometimes can be a little bit hard to do.”

“Hello” was released with a music video displaying a melancholy Adele and a mystery man. The video quickly shattered the Vevo record by beating out Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” for the most viewed video in 24 hours. This achievement successfully proved that Adele is back in full swing and has been missed by her millions of fans.
