A film can create any image or story imaginable. It unleashes creativity and allows the creator to express themselves in a different form. You can take advantage of this creative outlet and make your very own film in the one-of-a-kind film class at Marymount High School.

In this amazing class taught by Ms. Hackett, anyone can learn about the process of filmmaking from start to finish. The class teaches writing, directing, lighting, camerawork, and editing throughout both semesters. Digital Filmmaking 1 in the first semester focuses on shooting your own narrative film, while the second semester covers documentary filmmaking. Some classes are spent watching and analyzing classic movies to learn about technique and craft. Other times, we view and critique our own and each other’s in progress films. We’ve even had guest speakers who speak about the film industry and their own projects. For example, we recently welcomed director Becky Smith, an Emmy nominated director (for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) who also directed the feature film 16 TO LIFE (on Hulu and Netflix).
As a student, the Marymount film class has taught me to tell a story through the lens of a camera. I walked in on the first day with no prior experience in the course; by the end of the semester, I had a short film. I worked on my own films and worked as a crew member for my classmates, handling lighting, camera, and sound responsibilities. This class touches on every facet of filmmaking and gives you hands on experience. If you are interested in film, definitely go talk to your counselors about taking this course.

If you are interested in getting a taste of the class or viewing the fantastic films students have produced, come to the Period 9 Film Class showing on Tuesday May 17th in the library!
