Tis’ the season to be spooky! You know what that means–it’s the perfect time for watching the scariest horror movies. Everyone wants a scary movie to leave them terrified and needing a night light; therefore, here is a list of the top 10 scariest and spookiest movies, perfect for the Halloween season!

  1. The Babadook

The Babadook is a foreign film about a widowed mother, Amelia, and her child, Samuel, who one day are greeted at the door by a mysterious pop-up book called The Babadook. Amelia and Samuel then make the fatal mistake of opening the book and reading it. The Babadook begins to haunt the family until they lose their minds!

  1. Halloween

Halloween is a slasher flick about a serial killer named Michael Myers who murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was locked away for 15 years, but he broke out when he turned 21. Myers then returns to his hometown, Haddonfield, Illinois, where he resumes his bloodthirsty rampage.

  1. Carrie (1976)

Based on the popular and best-selling novel by the king of horror, Stephen King, Carrie is a movie about a bullied and abused girl named Carrie White. Though Carrie might seem like an ordinary teen, she actually has the power of telekinesis. When Carrie loses control of her power, things start to take a dark and violent turn.

  1. The Shining

Another one of Stephen King’s masterpieces, The Shining is a novel-based movie about a caretaker named Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and his son Danny, who are stuck in a hotel in Colorado during the harsh winter. As time passes, Jack starts to experience cabin fever and discovers the hotel’s dark secrets, while Danny begins to have terrifying hallucinations of dead people.

  1. The Ring (Japanese adaptation)

The Ring is a Japanese horror film about a horrifyingly disturbing videotape filled with frightening images. Anyone who watches the tape has only seven days to live. Once they watch the film, they receive a phone call from a terrifying voice that says, “seven days.” An investigator, Rachel Keller, tries to get to the bottom of this supernatural tape.

  1. Ju-On: The Grudge

Another Japanese film, Ju-On is a horror film about a house haunted by a violent and vengeful spirit. Anyone who dares to enter the house suffers a horrible death. It’s terrifying imagery and urban legend vibe will leave viewers hiding under their blankets.

  1. It (both adaptations)

It is about a small town in Maine called Derry that seems normal at first, but every 27 years, an evil shape-shifting being known as “It” goes on a killing spree. A group of teens try to destroy the evil being while learning the importance of love, friendship, and self-discovery.

  1. The Exorcist

A classic horror film, The Exorcist, is about a little girl named Regan that is possessed by the Devil. Regan starts levitating and speaking in strange tongues; unfortunately, only an exorcism can save her.

  1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a gory film about a group of friends that go on a trip. Taking a detour, they end up in an old farmhouse that was previously occupied by a family of cannibals and a chainsaw-wielding serial killer that wears a mask made of human skin, named Leatherface. As you can guess, things only went downhill from there.

  1.  Insidious

A cult favorite and popular horror movie, Insidious is about a family that lives in a haunted house. The parents’ comatose son is possessed by a demon that plans to eat his soul. Will he be saved? Watch and find out!
