Ladies and gentlemen of the Marymount Community. From November 9 to 11 of this year, the Marymount Players performed the dramatic play The Triangle Factory Fire Project, based on the real-life event that took place in New York City on March 25, 1911.

The fire occurred in the Asch Building, which is now a part of New York University’s campus, on the 9th floor. One hundred and forty-six people died in this tragedy, most of them young immigrant women. The event was recorded as the greatest disaster to blight New York before 9/11. This powerful play was the Marymount Players’ first dramatic production in a few years and was a challenge for the actors. Junior Isabelle Perez, who played New York District Attorney Charles Bostwick and factory worker Yetta Lubitz, said that preparing for this play required a lot of hard work from everyone in the cast. The small cast of 18 rehearsed for nine weeks after school and on Saturdays. Isabelle also found it to be “one of the most rewarding experiences [she has] ever had. [The] cast bonded so much and [she is] so proud of [everyone involved] for taking on this challenge.”

This production not only impacted the cast but also the audience as well. Ms. Dickey, one of Marymount’s English teachers, stated that this play had reminded her that as much as everything changes, everything also remains the same. She says, “the treatment of immigrant workers, the disregard for worker safety, and the failure of the courts to really prosecute the owners resonate with events we experience today, over 100 years later.” The Marymount Community congratulates the Players for their hard work and for a spectacular and moving performance.

Expect to see the Players again this spring! They will perform the musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in March!
