The Met Gala returned on May 6, 2024, with its annual celebration of fashion, art, and culture. The concept for the 2024 Met was entitled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Guests dressed to the theme of “The Garden of Time,” which was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story of the same name. 

Accompanying the Met Gala, from the tenth of May to the second of September, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will exhibit 250 historically important pieces, which are referred to as the “sleeping beauties” due to their fragility; these pieces are so delicate, they can’t be worn again. Designers included in this exhibition include Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hubert de Givenchy. This exhibit connects to “The Garden of Time” as the theme and the exhibit connect under a similar concept–the evolution of human history and the preservation of the world. Looking at the Met this year, the hosts this year were Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny. Additionally, Loewe sponsored the Met, so many celebrities, such as Ariana Grande, Greta Lee, and Taylor Russell were dressed by the brand.

Those who attended the Met this year interpreted the theme in many different ways. Many referenced the theme of the natural world through floral motifs such as looks worn by Amanda Seyfried and Ayo Edebri. Other interpretations nodded to the theme of time; one standout was Tyla’s hourglass-themed sand dress made by Balmain. Other guests, such as Kendall Jenner and Nicole Kidman, looked towards archival looks and attended in vintage fashions.

After another successful Met Gala, fans can’t help but look forward to what next year has in store.
