As of April 23, 2026, Warner Bros Discovery shareholders approved a major deal of $111 billion involving their takeover by Paramount. According to Variety, investors were in intense favor of the deal and agreed to a $31 per share cash for Warner Bro’s. Discovery, meaning Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders will receive $31 for each share of common stock they own. However, many of these shareholders did not allow for the proposed exit compensation package for the CEO, David Zaslav, and top executives at the company. David Zaslav’s exit package is presumptively valued at over $550 million.

So, what does this merger actually mean, and how will it affect streamers? Well, this acquisition of Warner Bros by Paramount Skydance will aim to merge the two prominent media platforms, covering film, television, and streaming. It will result in a combination of Paramount’s portfolio, including CBS, Paramount Pictures, and Paramount +, with Warner Bros. Discovery assets. Some major ones include HBO, CNN, DC Studios, and the many operations of Warner Bros. film and television. This will create a huge media corporation and platform, completely transforming the media industry.

However, the merger has received appropriate backlash. Many fear that the merger will lead to further consolidation of companies controlling film production. In counteraction, over 1,000 filmmakers and creatives of the industry signed an open letter in opposition to the two companies merging, fearing that it will lead to a decline in opportunities and jobs in the film and television industry. According to PBS News, the merger is currently viewed negatively by critics, who suggest an increase in subscription prices for viewers. Regarding News, Paramount is already in ownership of CBS, meaning the Warner Bros. owned CNN would be under the same control. As CBS has experienced profound changes in editing and appealing to conservative viewers, critics fear the same will occur for CNN. The merger is expected to close by September 30, 2026, or the end of Q3; therefore, we will see what ultimately occurs as a result of this profound deal.
