Hiking has grown more popular over the last year as a result of most indoor activities closing due to COVID-19. At the beginning of quarantine, most people found hiking to be a fabulous, new way to get out of the house and gain some exercise in their restricted circumstances; however, many others, including myself, have always enjoyed hiking with family and friends on the weekends. In Los Angeles, there are many accessible trails scattered throughout the city. Each hike has immaculate views, some even overlooking the ocean.

Starting with city trails, most locations are situated near the Hollywood area. One of my personal favorite hiking spots is the Hollywood Reservoir. Even though this is not your typical dirt trail, you have an incredible perspective of the Hollywood sign and the city. It’s roughly a 3.5 mile walk with a gorgeous view of the reservoir and the surrounding homes, and you can find a dog park right up the street from the trails, a fantastic picture spot with the Hollywood sign.

A celebrity hiking hotspot is located nearby. Runyon Canyon is one of the most popular trails in Los Angeles with mesmerizing views of Los Angeles. Hiking Runyon around sunset is common because of its lookout spots which provide individuals with the perfect place to watch the bright colors of the sky at the end of the day. Lastly, the Griffith Park trails lead to both the Griffith Observatory and beloved picnic areas. These city trails are ones you should definitely explore!

If you are looking for something closer to the ocean, two of my personal favorites are the San Vicente Mountain Park Trails and Temescal Gateway Park Trails. The San Vicente Mountain trails are located in the San Fernando Valley, where you can observe the beauty of the ocean contrasted to the wonders of the city. These trails were originally home to a former Nike Missile/Radar control site: currently, hikers can climb and take pictures on an old portion of the site.

Even closer to the ocean, Temescal is situated right off of Sunset Boulevard. near Will Rogers Beach in the Palisades. These trails attract less heat than those in the valley as hikers encounter the cool sea breeze. Temescal Gateway Park is the perfect place for a relaxing walk with an ocean sunset. A hiking adventure that includes spending time in nature will nourish your body and soul!
