Recently, two influential tennis players, Serena Williams and Roger Federer, retired from the sport. They are two of the most iconic tennis players to impact and change the sport over the years. Many have been honoring these athletes and showing their appreciation for them as they finish their careers.

During the US Open many fans, celebrities, and tennis players all shared their appreciation for Serena Williams as it was her last tournament of her professional career. Serena advanced to the third round of the US Open but lost to Ajila Tomljanović from Australia. It was an intense match with Tomljanović winning 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. Both played very well and it was an intense match. After the match Serena gave a memorable speech thanking everyone who made her career possible and thanking the fans for supporting her. She thanked her mom, her dad, and her sister, Venus, saying, “I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus.” Nike posted a video honoring her and her impact on the game of tennis. The video illustrated how Serena showed what it is to be a true champion and how she didn’t change who she was, which changed everything. Oprah Winfrey was one celebrity who showed her appreciation for Serena and her legacy. She narrated a video at the opening of the match honoring Serena saying, “Thank you for changing the face of the game. For inspiring the next generation.” Serena has had a legendary career as she holds 23 Grand Slam titles. Serena explained in a Vogue magazine article that she is stepping down from her professional tennis career to discover a new Serena. Her plan is to enter the business world and invest in women-centered businesses.

His last tournament was the Laver Cup in London, England where he played doubles with Rafael Nadal. Both were on a team with Stefano Tsitsipas, Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Casper, Ruud, and Novak Djokovic. Although he lost his last singles and doubles matches, Federer had a memorable last tournament. He gave a speech thanking everyone for their support that brought many to tears including his rival and good friend, Rafael Nadal. Federer made an Instagram post saying, “It was a magical evening yesterday. Thank you again to all the players and fans who were here to share this moment. It meant the world to me.” Federer has had an amazing career as he holds many records including 20 Grand Slam titles. What Federer decides to do next remains to be seen.
