Winter Sports Highlights

The winter sports season has started with a bang for our Sailor athletes as we already see signs of domination and growth. Basketball, Water Polo, and Soccer are the three sports focused on this season of the year.

Basketball:

Focused on improvement from last year’s tough season, the varsity basketball team has started off strong and has most definitely shown growth from last year’s experiences. They have won 7 games and lost 1 which is an amazing achievement. In addition to that, the team is also ranked 7th in their division, a celebration worthy accomplishment considering that it has been some time since the Sailors have been ranked in their division for varsity basketball. They recently took a trip down to Palm Springs where they won two of their 7 wins, leading to their title of the “Desert Destroyers”. JV basketball also had a very impressive start with a first game blowout of 36-0 against Panorama. Each member is very dedicated to the team and shows great efforts at practices and games. The team also welcomes Coach Spivey as JV coach and assistant varsity coach. He has been a great help, motivating all players to do their best and to never stop fighting. A big congratulations to the basketball teams, keep up the great work!

Soccer:

The varsity and JV soccer teams have been putting large amounts of work into practices and games, resulting in their great wins. Their strong teamwork and perseverance has also paid off, allowing the teams to become stronger every day. The varsity team recently participated in the South Torrance Tournament where they were 1-1 on the field. Keaton D. ‘24 scored the winning goal in their first game against Palos Verdes High School. Jaya B. ‘24 made many amazing saves as goalie and Amber G. ‘23 scored a great goal in their second game against Redondo Union, but they fell short 1-4. Reagan F. ‘23 was awarded athlete of the week for her hard work and great accomplishments during the first JV game of the year. Good luck to both teams in their upcoming games!

Water Polo:

Similar to the other winter sports, the water polo team has been working very hard for this season. Athletes have shown up to preseason conditioning and morning practices despite the cold weather and the rain we have recently been experiencing; this just shows the dedication each member of the team has and how much effort they put into getting ready for a brand new season. Lilly F. ‘23 was recently awarded the athlete of the week for her leadership and determination. She is always punctual and expresses her trust in all of her teammates, encouraging them to work hard and endure the challenges presented to them. The water polo team will be participating in the Chino Hills Tournament this weekend, wishing them the best of luck!

The strength of all winter sports at Marymount this year is no joke, so it is very exciting to see everyone’s hard work pay off. Let’s go Sailors!!
