Marymount Athlete Spotlight: The Dynamic Duo

Marymount Athlete Spotlight: The Dynamic Duo

Taylor Boehm, Staff Writer

Before starting at Marymount High School in the fall, Marymount running superstars Avery Frankel ’26 and Avery Reyes ’26  had not met yet. Little did they know that they would become an integral part of both the Track and Cross Country teams through their determination, hard work, and their astute running abilities. Both Avery Frankel and Avery Reyes ran on Varsity Cross Country, with Avery Reyes leading her teammates in the division 4 freshman race to a 2nd place victory out of 25 schools at the Mt. SAC Invitational. At the end of the cross country season, both athletes received recognition for their dedication and effort, with Avery Reyes receiving the MVP award, and Avery Frankel receiving the Coach’s Award.

During track season, Avery Reyes has been focusing on running long distance, whereas Avery Frankel has been exploring all aspects of track, already running both the 200 and 400 meter, as well as shot-put and high jump. When asked who their greatest supporters have been throughout the seasons, both girls were quick to mention how their family, friends, and coaches have been motivating them since day one.

Avery Frankel represents Marymount in the high jump at a track meet on March 1st.

According to Avery Frankel,  her greatest supporters have been her family, “because my parents make a huge effort to get me to all of my events, and come watch me every time I have a game or meet.” Avery Reyes agrees, saying that “my greatest supporters running track are my coaches and my friends because they encourage me to keep running and they make the sport more fun.” Both Avery Frankel and Avery Reyes look up to Kobe Bryant, a former professional basketball player, as a sports idol. According to Avery Frankel, “I look up to Kobe Bryant because he has been an inspiration for many people, and he was amazing at basketball.” Both Avery Frankel and Avery Reyes demonstrate the remarkable qualities that Kobe Bryant once had, including his courage, determination, and most importantly, the will to make an effort. Avery Frankel and Avery Reyes continue to help their team improve and grow, and when being asked what they would tell people who have never run track or cross country before, they made sure to mention to “try all of the events, and put yourself out there, so that you can figure out what you’re best at and what’s the most fun for you,” as well as to “stay committed to your sport and use it as an opportunity to grow and improve as well as meet new people.” Not only do Avery Frankel and Reyes encourage others to try their best in their sport, but they continue to motivate themselves to push to be the best athletes they can be. Congratulations Avery Frankel and Avery Reyes for always striving to improve! Keep up the great work!
