With the arrival of the last issue of The Anchor of the year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the amazing experience I have had with The Anchor throughout my Marymount career.
New Beginnings:
Because of the pandemic, I was not able to join The Anchor my freshman year, but I was very invested in all the impressive articles written by staff writers and made sure to apply for a role as soon as applications came out. In my Sophomore year, I was chosen to be the News Section Editor. Taking on this role felt great considering that I was just a Sophomore, but it was also a bit nerve-racking because I had to edit articles written by upperclassmen as well as properly upload all materials to our site. Soon enough, I became very familiar with my own process as a section editor. Being the editor of the News Section gave me the unique opportunity to think of and write about topics that are not widely discussed. I was also really grateful to be able to shed light on topics that deserved more attention.
Switch to Athletics!:
For the past two years, I have been the Athletics Section Editor for The Anchor. Sports, especially women’s athletics, hold a special place in my heart, so when I was chosen to be the Athletics Section editor at the beginning of my Junior year, I was very ready to take on that switch. I believe that the best article ideas that I came up with and also wrote about pertain to athletics. As editor of this section, I make sure to take advantage of the opportunity and highlight the strength of female sports within and outside of our community. I am always excited to read or write about seasonal MHS sports highlights, articles that give athlete lifestyle recommendations, and any great records broken by women in sports. If you scroll down the recent articles in the Athletics Section, you can probably see that there is a lot of basketball-related content. As a basketball player and fan, I made sure to incorporate as much basketball content as I could because, you never know, basketball might not be highlighted this much on The Anchor in the coming years. My favorite articles I have written would have to be Dodgers Domination, as I was able to share my personal experience as a Dodger fan; A Bracket Busting March Madness, because the 2023 NCAA D1 WBB tournament was CRAZY, and Sarina Bolden: Inspiring Generations of Athletes, because I think it is so cool to be able to highlight my passion for my culture and sports.
Reaching the End:
The Anchor was most definitely one of my favorite extracurriculars at Marymount, and I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to join such an inspiring team of talented writers and hard-working editors. I will miss being able to highlight aspects within our community as well as some outside, but because of The Anchor, I have developed an interest in participating in similar publications in college as well as sports journalism. I encourage all who read this to support The Anchor and to even join the staff. Thank you to all who made my time on The Anchor the best it could ever be. I am very sad to say goodbye, but I hope my articles will continue to have an impact on the Marymount community for years to come. Janella Herrera signing out!
