As the spring sports season comes to a close, Coach Wes from Varsity Softball was interviewed about this past season.
- What was your highlight of the softball season?
There were two. In a home game vs Immaculate Heart, our second baseman, Caroline K, either assisted or made 6 outs and was having a day. It was fun to watch and great for the team.
The second one was from the same game. Our pitcher, Madi K., though no fault of her own, had to pitch longer than she should have. With multiple errors and two outs, she had to keep pitching under the most stressful circumstances. She never wilted, never relented, and never quit. She kept pitching, she kept fighting, and she had the heart of a champion under the most duress. I will always remember that moment.
- How did you become a softball coach?
I was focused on baseball until my daughter started playing softball. I dove in head first, learning all I could to be the best coach possible. The transition was pretty seamless since many of the rules from baseball were applicable to softball and the ones that weren’t I learned right away.
- What are your goals for next season?
Number one, find a full-time pitcher. That would really help our team as a whole, as we had players who would rather be playing their positions and not pitching. Having them play their positions and not pitch would elevate our program tremendously. Secondly, convince and retain the standout new players who contributed to our team and will make us better next season!
- How are you planning to spend your summer?
Oh man! The Santa Monica Softball Academy and Baseball Academy run summer camps all summer long. We also have travel teams for softball and baseball playing all summer. The 16U baseball team is going to Germany for the baseball Europe Super Cup and I hope to go as well in late July.
- Where is your dream field to play at? (ex. different country/state/etc,)
I’m living the dream! I get to play at Marine Park in Santa Monica with our 60 x 90 field for baseball and our high school softball field on the other side. I love it every time we play there!
