Meet More of Marymount II

Highlighted Faculty Member of the Quarter: Dr. Daryl Doan

In West Philadelphia born and raised, biking is how he spent most of his days…he’d like to take minute-just sit right there-we’ll tell you how he became a teacher in a town called Bel-Air. An excellent addition to the Marymount family, Dr. Daryl Doan started working on campus this fall. Here, he explains more about his life outside of school, mentioning his hobbies, favorite Marymount experiences, and insight into how he came to be a teacher in California.

How have you enjoyed Marymount so far?

It’s been good, I’ve really enjoyed it! It seems like a good fit for me.

Where did you get your doctorate and what was it in?

University of Pennsylvania and Bioengineering.

What hobbies do you have?

Biking and I do a lot of hiking and camping. It’s not just riding locally; I’ve done bike trips across the United States and Europe. I raced BMX bikes between the ages of 12-16. I also raced mountain bikes for 5 years in my 20s and was captain of the cycling team at the University of Pennsylvania.

Do you have a favorite Marymount experience you would be willing to share?

The Junior Retreat was very good, I enjoyed that a lot. I liked the outdoor activities. I’d never done ziplining before and I got to climb a rock wall!

What is your favorite book? Favorite movie? Favorite artist?

Catch 22, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Frank Black.

What’s the story behind your eccentric ties? Have you ever considered bow ties?

Usually people just give them to me as gifts. I bought the first few myself, but they’re normally gifts. As for bow ties, I don’t really like them.

The dividing question: East Coast or West Coast?

West Coast.

Highlighted Sailor Sister of the Quarter: Eiara Fajardo

Taken by Dani Glenn ‘18

Although she may not be a new sailor at Marymount, sophomore Eiara Fajardo is still one of Marymount’s most beloved students. A gifted singer, talented songwriter, and superstar student, Eiara does it all. Here, she gives us more information on her personal interests and even shares some unknown facts about herself.

So far, what has been the highlight of your sophomore year?

Retreat, because I did things I never thought I could do, like climbing a rock wall (and finishing)! It gave me some positivity to keep going, and it taught me that [the Sophomore class] is here to support me, and that they have my back. It taught me to trust people more.

After Marymount, do you have any idea of what you’d like to study in college? If so, why?

Well, I’m still kind of undecided. Through Marymount, I was able to attend the UCLA tech camp, which introduced me to engineering, so I might want to do something with that. I’m not sure yet.

Favorite animal?

Wolves. When I was younger I read a book series that was from a wolf’s perspective and I’ve been interested in wolves ever since.

Who is your favorite artist/band at the moment?

Simple Plan. They’re amazing, I love them.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Sometimes, if I’m in a certain situation or a setting, I like to write small poems or songs based on whatever is happening. I started writing when I was around 11 or 12, and completed my first song when I was 13.

If you got one wish for 2017, what would it be?

I wish that 2017 will be better than 2016!
