Lizzo’s “Special” Tour

Ruby Beckerman, Staff Writer

A few months ago, my mom casually asked me if I wanted to go to a Lizzo concert. Although I only know Lizzo’s famous Tik Tok songs, of course, I said yes. She has proven over and over again that she’s the ultimate queen, and after seeing her perform last night, I can confirm that statement to be correct. Walking into the Forum, classic quotes like “I do my hair toss,” “About Damn Time,” and “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that B**ch” covered the walls as people posed for selfies with the iconic sayings. Walking into the arena, I was surprised to see more mothers than kids in the audience.

To begin the show, the stage went dark, accompanied by a message from Lizzo displayed on the screen. She talked about the need for self-love, which her whole album is based upon. At the end of the message, the background lit up, and a grinning Lizzo blew up on the screen and asked, “Did you miss me?” The crowd went crazy. She arose from the bottom of the stage in a bright blue, sequined jumpsuit (as she should). Although I didn’t recognize most of the songs, I was able to feel her presence and excitement on another level. The passion of her performance made it seem like every song was her favorite.

After intervals of singing, she would pause and say something about self-love and women’s rights. This really connected with me due to my love for gender equality and women’s rights. It was rewarding to finally see an artist who does more with their music. There was a real message she was trying to convey throughout the entire show. As she is considered “plus size” and has more curvy body type, she expressed the words that have been forced upon her regarding her appearance. She made it clear that everyone, no matter their looks or gender, deserves to love themselves and realize their capabilities to do anything they want. She instructed the audience in a therapeutic, meditation-like moment to repeat the affirmations of “I love you, you are beautiful, and you can do anything.”

During another song I didn’t know, “Naked,” she walked out in a luxurious, ruffled, silk robe which she eventually took off, leaving a plain brown bodysuit. The lights began displaying scenes on her body, lime stars, flowers, and, eventually, the words “My Body My Choice.” After the song ended, she stated that whatever politicians may do, it will always be “My Body My Choice.” I saw this as another way Lizzo used her concert for the benefit of others and to bring awareness to the current issues our world faces.

This tour definitely set the expectations high for future concerts.. Lizzo shined throughout the entire show, making it obvious that she was so happy to be performing. Even without knowing all of the songs, I was able to take away many meaningful messages. I will forever remember this show, the booty shaking, flute playing, and all.
