From neuroscience to interior design, this summer Sailors are exploring a vast array of unique career paths. This article delves into the fascinating internship opportunities in which sailors will partake over the summer of 2024 and discusses the various components of each internship. So, whether you are searching for an internship for next summer or are just curious about what your fellow sailors are up to, this piece has something for everyone!
When asked whether or not they would be pursuing an internship this summer, many Sailors responded that they would be partaking in an internship related to the STEM field. More specifically, many of these STEM internships are in collaboration with UCLA. The university’s neuroscience internship appears to be this summer’s most popular STEM internship among the sailors. Katherine Ting ‘26, who is participating in the aforementioned internship gives insight as to the specific focus of the program stating, “It [the internship] specializes in patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.” According to Katherine, participants will be taught vital skills such as how to recognize synapses and will assist with lab work. Other Sailors claimed that they would be completing a different one of UCLA’s medical internships, more specifically, a heart transplant and mechanical circulatory program.
Another popular field for internships this summer seems to be that of public health. Specifically, numerous students will partake in Georgetown internships centered around public health and medicine. As detailed by Sailors partaking in the program, participants will shadow medical professionals, learn to perform an endoscopy and draw blood, and create a public health campaign with ties to clinics in Nigeria. Additionally, those engaged in the internship will complete a final project which consists of studying the most common diseases in sub-Saharan Africa and diagnosing a patient as well as recommending the appropriate treatment. Various other sailors interested in the public health sector will be interning at Cancer Support Community in Los Angeles.
Law is another overwhelmingly popular field for sailors participating in internships this summer. Many students state that they will be interning with the courts in Los Angeles this summer. Taylor Boehm ‘26 asserts that she will be partaking in the formerly mentioned internship: “I am doing a law internship that allows high school students to work alongside many law professionals, with our mentor being a judge to help us learn more about the field of law. I am extremely excited about this internship, as I would love to pursue a career in law in the future, and I can’t wait for the amazing experience ahead!” The internship will permit students to observe a multitude of cases and gain practical work experience with practicing officers of the law.
Finally, the professional fields of architecture and interior design are also popular among Sailors this summer. Those intrigued by the prospect of a career in interior design have the opportunity to work with Amazing Grace Design to acquire a more in-depth understanding of the field. Those drawn to architecture are working with CO Architects, an architecture and design firm that specializes in education, healthcare, medical education, science, and technology.
At large, it is clear that this summer, Sailors will be traversing the unique environments of a broad spectrum of competitive professional fields through various internships; each with their own array of opportunities. Best of luck to all those participating in internships this summer!
