With the holidays approaching, Marymount’s halls have been buzzing with spirit. From attire to playlists, Sailors have got it down. But what is playing in everyone’s ears this season? The answer is: everything! Whether it be nostalgic classic crooners or joyful modern pop anthems, students shared their favorite songs of the season.

After sending out a survey, we gathered lots of information about students’ music preferences. There was one song that lots of students favored. Can you guess which one? The undisputed winner was… “Last Christmas!” Whether it’s the Wham! original, or George Michael’s solo version, or simply just the idea of it, Sailors mentioned this song far more than any others. The bittersweet ‘80s classic continues to dominate playlists and hearts.
Alongside Wham!, Pop icons also held a top spot. Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” was repeated numerous times, and

Mariah Carey’s eternal hit “All I Want for Christmas” was also a favorite among students seeking cheerful, festive songs. Kelly Clarkson was also mentioned with her song “Underneath the Tree.”
While lots of students enjoy listening to upbeat tunes, other Sailors appreciate their classics. Frank Sinatra received several shout-outs for “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” as did Brenda Lee with her classic hit “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Bing Crosby’s “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “Let it Snow” also received multiple appreciative nods, keeping the classic Christmas spirit alive among the Marymount community.
Not all Sailors stuck to the mainstream, though. Joni Mitchell’s “River” offers a softer, more introspective tone. Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” brings an old-school/hip-hop flair.

Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal” comes up for those who enjoy harmonies with hints of melancholy. Other students liked to get creative with their selections: “Holiday Road,” “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” “Like It’s Christmas,” by the Jonas Brothers, and Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe.” These songs showcase the wide range of musical tastes within the Marymount community.
Some heartfelt favorites consist of John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War is Over),” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Silent Night,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Sleigh Ride.” All are powerful seasonal anthems. These songs really round out Marymount’s more traditional holiday music staples.

From pop, to classic, to indie, or to hip-hop, Sailors know how to celebrate the season in style. Though, one thing is for certain — Marymount’s soundtrack is diverse, festive, and forever joyful. PLAYLIST LINK
