Skiing vs. Snowboarding

Skiing+vs.+Snowboarding%C2%A0

As the winter season approaches, it is time to hit the slopes! Skiing and snowboarding are both popular winter sports that people all over the world participate in when those chilly months come. During the winter break, a lot of friends and families travel to the mountains to ski or snowboard at beautiful resorts. Some people ski or snowboard because they love the activity, while others love to go because they like being in a mountain resort. Whatever the case is, the skiing and snowboarding industry is massive and is something that has been highly recommended to try at least once in your life.

When deciding between skiing or snowboarding, one must look at the pros and cons of each first. Firstly, skiing has been proven as the easiest of the two to learn as a beginner. When you are skiing, you have two skis attached to each foot which makes it more easy to move. You use ski poles when skiing which make it easier to move over flat terrain. It is easier to get off and on the chairlift. You also do not have to worry about putting back on your boots whenever you get on or off a chairlife which you do have to do when snowboarding.

On the other hand, while skiing has many pros, there are also cons. Skiing has more expensive gear and you need more gear than snowboarders. The boots are also more uncomfortable than snowboarding boots. Skiing is done by having two skis and this can be challenging. It can also be harder on your knees and ankles. Some mountains even forbid snowboarders, as they can scrape snow off from natural terrains.

Personally, I am a skiing fan. I have been skiing every winter since I was 4. I love skiing, but it is all I have ever known. I have never been snowboarding, but I have plenty of friends who enjoy it. On the pros side of snowboarding, there have been many accounts relating snowboarding to skateboarding. If you are a good skateboarder, the skill is transferable. Furthermore, snowboarding gear is more affordable and has fewer pieces you have to keep track of. Having one flat surface makes it easier to move through all types of snow such as powder as well as wet, slushy snow.

However, on the cons side, snowboarding is not intuitive. Many people have a hard time getting used to their feet being stuck together. Thus, it is way easier to fall when snowboarding and it is usually on your butt. For me, I have experienced many beginner snowboarders who have broken wrists trying to catch themself as they fall. It is also harder to move over flat terrain commonly known as cat tracks. Skiiers use their poles to help push them along, but snowboarders have nothing.

Whether you choose to ski or snowboard, or whether or not you prefer one over the other, these winter sports are the epitome of fun! Both sports have been classic winter activities since their creation and, in my opinion, are the best way to spend winter break. Being in the snow, drinking hot chocolate, and ending the day with fun skiing or snowboarding on a gorgeous mountain can transport you to an unforgettable winter wonderland.
