Sometimes, school can undoubtedly get overwhelming. Assignments, deadlines, and nonstop studying can leave you feeling drained. That’s why taking a break isn’t just nice; it’s necessary. Whether you need a quick distraction from homework or a full reset, finding the right ways to recharge can help clear your mind. From outdoor adventures to creative hobbies, there are countless ways to relax, have fun, and reduce stress. To make it easier, here are five categories of activities that can help shift your focus from school and bring some much-needed balance to your routine.
Outdoor Activities

Getting outside can be one of the best ways to deal with school-related stress. Whether you’re in the mood for an active activity or just want to relax, here are a few ways to spend some time outdoors:
Go for a Hike or Walk
- Try going on a hike or walk! Hikes are a great option if you’re looking for a longer outing, and one of my favorite spots is Tree People. But if you’re looking for something more convenient, try a simple walk around your neighborhood (or a new one!). Listening to your favorite music or podcast can enhance the experience, and it’s always nice to stop for a snack along the way!
Have a Picnic at the Park
- Pack a blanket and some snacks, then go to a nearby park. Enjoying a picnic is a helpful way to disconnect for a while. Invite friends or family for a more social outing, or you can also go alone! If you’re near Marymount, Holby Park is a great spot to relax!
The Beach
- Going to the beach for swimming, surfing, tanning, or whatever else you are in the mood for. With the weather warming up and UV levels rising, it’s the perfect time to be outside and enjoy the water!
Creative Outlets

Creative activities allow a break from academic pressures, providing not only an enjoyable outlet but a chance to relax, reflect, and discover new interests; here are a couple of suggestions!
Start a journal
- Writing in a journal can help organize your thoughts and provide clarity. Use it to express feelings, stay motivated, or brainstorm random ideas. The possibilities are endless!
Cooking/Baking
- Try cooking or baking something new! Experimenting in the kitchen is a fun and rewarding way to unwind. Whether you’re following a recipe or just making it up as you go, it’s a great way to take a break and enjoy some delicious foods!
Physical Activities
Working out is both extremely physically beneficial and also very mentally refreshing. It keeps you healthy, and boosts brain performance, all while providing an enjoyable way to release built-up tension. Here are some good ways to get active:
Sports
- Whether it’s a sport you’ve been playing for years or something new you want to try, it’s a fun way to get moving. Casual games with friends are also a great way to stay fit and socialize at the same time.
Gym or home workouts
- Going to the gym or finding a workout routine at home is a great way to decompress! If you don’t have a gym nearby, tons of YouTube workout videos make it easy to exercise at home. Just dedicating a few minutes each day can make a huge difference!

While staying active is important, sometimes the best way to unwind is by watching a good show or movie while enjoying delicious snacks.

- Starting a new series or revisiting an old favorite provides an escape from everyday pressures and can take your mind off certain worries! It allows your brain to rest and recharge, ensuring better performance in the long run!
Mindfulness and Relaxation
Taking the time to care for yourself is necessary in managing stress. Here are some self-care ideas:
Take a relaxing bath and practice self-care
- Set aside time for a soothing bath or practice self-care in whichever way works for you, whether through sleep, nutritious eating, or other calming activities. Always try to leave yourself some downtime to reset and unwind. Working hard is incredibly draining, and you deserve to relax!
Practice yoga or meditation (Online Guided Meditation)
- Both yoga and meditation have been shown to effectively reduce stress, enhance focus, and improve sleep, alongside many other mental and physical benefits. By directing your attention inward, these practices allow you to take a step back from daily pressures and instead connect with your inner self.
