Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York for the past decade, has recently been exposed for multiple instances of sexual misconduct by his former and current aides. First, to call attention to Cuomo’s behavior, Lindsey Boylan explains that she had experienced multiple instances of physical sexual harassment, alongside often “flirtatious banter,” sexual comments, and questions about her sex life (NY Times). After Boylan came forward about her experience, many other women, including Alyssa McGrath, Charlotte Bennett, Anna Ruch, and an unknown female aide, have also spoken up about their experiences. They have revealed that in the workplace, although there are no dress requirements, they often feel pressured by the governor to wear feminine products, such as dresses, heels, and makeup. As if the harassment in the office was not enough, Cuomo has translated such inappropriate behavior to public events, as well, aides say. Outside of the office, Ruch detailed unwanted advances during a wedding event, where he kissed her, put his hand on her “bare lower back,” and “[placed] his hands on [her] cheeks” (NY Times).

In response to these accusations, politicians from all around—Republican and Democratic, State Capitol, Washington, and even New York’s congressional members—have called for Cuomo’s resignation. The New York State Assembly has opened an inquiry for impeachment, and state attorney general Letitia James has opened an investigation. However, Cuomo has consistently been denying the sexual allegations, instead claiming that he considers his employees solely as friends and apologizing if he had made any feel uncomfortable. Furthermore, he has been fighting against politicians’ wishes for his resignation, insisting that their desires are driven by “cancel culture” and “political differences” (CNN).

As the investigation still continues, Cuomo continues to insist that all his actions were “unintentional” and “[he has done] anything wrong” (CNN). Will the investigation reveal potent instances that could fuel the fire before the hopes of impeachment becomes reality? Or will Cuomo’s few words ultimately prevail above the countless women’s words?
