Well, first off, what is TikTok?

Tiktok is a popular social media app amongst youth, infamous for users only being allowed to create short clips (three minutes or less) on the platform. Similar to Instagram, one scroll through a Tik Tok feed up and down to view popular and trendy content. The app provides content creators with a multitude of options to “jazz up” their clips: users can use filters, choose a variety of sounds to play over their video, and/or make their own audio, with the chance of it becoming an Internet sensation. Creators are even encouraged to engage with other content from around the world via “duetting” or “stitching” videos, in which a user can add their content onto another user’s uploaded clip.

Okay, so now you know the basics. But what’s the big rave about it?

Aside from the apps’ assortment of tools, TikToks’ prominence largely sparks from the various “dances”, “challenges” and/or “trends”  created on the platform. TikTok Dances and repeating formats consume this app, with some creators even gaining significantly large platforms by either creating or surfing off the wave of viral trends. Such fame has coined some users with the name of being a “TikToker”. A “TikToker” has typically accumulated millions of followers through uploading viral videos, either through creating funny content and/or dancing to popularized songs on the app.

As a result of the significant influence these social phenomenons have over youth, the app wields the striking power to mold and alter pop culture of the modern 21st Century, with its global growth spurring trendy dance moves, revitalizing music, and popularizing products.

LED Strip Lights garnered TikTok popularity, in which users hang them around their room to illuminate the space- changing the lights for music clips, selfies, and because the lights are just a vibe, man.

As TikTok’s engagements become more popular, youth are more inclined to join, many yearning to be “in” with the trends and others just simply captivated by the plethora of amusement provided. Despite the “bite-sized” content offered on this app, the entertainment is tellingly endless, from people finding their community through creating or watching videos, to others hopping on the band-wagon of fashion styles taking the world by storm.
