A question that has been lingering on our mind since the beginning of the pandemic is “Could  Covid going to be the new flu?” The pandemic has drastically changed our lives for the past two years with everyone in the US as the 2020 was spent within our homes and in 2021 with places starting to open up with the vaccine becoming widely available. Coronavirus has taken the lives of over 6 million people and over 500 million people contracted the virus, impacting many families and friends with this worldwide pandemic. Even though new policies pertaining to masks and hygiene have become even more important, many people still fear the outcome of the virus as the public isn’t sure of their health. However, the virus has been starting to lose this battle, as scientists have been able to create a successful vaccine and people have been careful about contamination.

Over the past two years, there have been two different variants of the Covid-19 virus, the omicron and delta variants. Even though the variants cause the virus to be more contagious, it is considered less deadly than the original as it causes less symptoms and is less deadly. It has also become common knowledge that the Covid-19 virus has many similar symptoms to the flu, like cough, sore throat, etc. It has also been acting similar to the flu, as both Covid and the common flu are continuously mutating with new variants coming each year and scientists are combatting that with making vaccines.

Seeing the trend of the coronavirus, it could be very likely that this virus continues to spread similar to flu, as it has already been established by scientists that the virus will not be eradicated anytime soon. However, it will not likely drastically change our daily lives as more will create an immunity to the virus, leading us to go back to our regular routine and lives before 2020. Even now, restaurants are starting to open back up, people can travel more freely, and many schools, like Marymount, have gone back to full in class learning. Many people feel anxious towards this novel disease as the scientific community and public have been dealing well with the pandemic. However, like how the Covid-19 virus took us by storm in 2020, Covid-19 may have a new surge with a more dangerous and powerful variant, or even maybe, maybe, there might be a new virus nothing like anything before.
