The United States of America is racing against many other countries to get to the moon (again). Though it is not just anywhere on the moon, it is the South Pole. Many countries have reason to believe there is water ice deep in the craters that are found there, so they are looking to explore them.
Recently, the Biden Administration called on NASA to create a new time standard, one specific to the moon. This is because time moves slightly faster on the moon than it does on Earth. While the speed change may be minuscule, it can mean the difference between an unsuccessful and successful exploration of this part of the moon.
There is lower gravity on the moon than there is on Earth, which is what causes the slight time difference. Time moves 58.7 microseconds faster every day on the moon, so developing a time standard is essential. The new time standard will not only make it easier for future missions to communicate with each other but also for NASA to accurately track satellite and crew positions.
This new time standard can unify countries all over the world and revolutionize space exploration to the moon, changing the way the human race uses the moon forever.
