The violence in Mexico has been an issue of international concern following a military operation against one of the most powerful Mexican drug cartels. The violence took place in the state of Jalisco within the town of Tapalpa, which is located to the south of Guadalajara (the capital of the State). The violence was a result of an operation that led to the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, who was also referred to as “El Mencho” and was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The CJNG was formed in the early 2010s following a split from another organized crime group. The group has since grown rapidly to become one of the most powerful organized crime groups in Mexico.
Defense officials say they located the cartel leader after tracking one of his associates to a hideout in Tapalpa. They also say Oseguera Cervantes was wounded and taken into custody, but died while being transported to Mexico City for treatment.

Dozens of people died on both sides during this operation, and in the violence that followed. The authorities have not released full details of the case, and they have not released anything about the identities of many of the people involved. After the operation, violence spread across the region.
I personally have family in Guadalajara and called them to make sure they were okay and to get more information on what was actually going on. I talked to my cousin and my tío, and they said that it is no longer safe to go outside. Random homes and stores are being set on fire. I went to Guadalajara last November, and the mini market where I went with my family to buy pan dulce is no longer there. The cartel has even attacked the city’s international airport, leading to many casualties. Other things the cartel has done are set up roadblocks, burned vehicles, and attempted to block highways in multiple locations. There were also numerous reports of gunfire and smoke from burning vehicles in both government and residential areas.
Some businesses remained open, and daily life, to an extent, has continued for some, but everything is heavily armed with security forces throughout these areas. Most people, though, are not going to work in order to stay safe.
Authorities say that the cartel has developed an international drug trafficking network, which has been responsible for transporting substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. Much of the cartel’s activity has focused on supplying these drugs to the United States. CJNG has also developed a reputation for using aggressive tactics in the past, which are currently being brought to light.

At the same time, Guadalajara is preparing to host soccer matches during the 2026 World Cup this year at their newly built stadium, Estadio Akron. This World Cup is jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, and it is expected to bring thousands of international visitors to the city to watch these highly anticipated games.
Local officials say the World Cup could provide economic benefits through tourism and international attention. Guadalajara is known for its cultural traditions — mariachi music and tequila making — and its strong soccer history with the city’s team being the Chivas. (They also have really passionate fans).
However, the recent violence in Jalisco has raised questions about the security preparations for the tournament. Authorities say the preparation for the event will continue as planned, and ensuring the safety of the people will be a major priority as the World Cup approaches.
