This past February, Milan hosted one of the biggest sporting events of the year: The Winter Olympics. Just days prior to the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, rail workers staged a strike, causing chaos and disruptions for the influx of travelers.

The strike was arranged and sponsored by the regional branch of the ORSA Ferrovie union, as workers demanded safer working conditions and a discussion of an ongoing dispute over contract renewal. The stoppage affected routes all across Italy, as events have been spread across the country; however, in particular, it impacted Milan’s main airport.

The strike triggered a series of delays. With only days until the Games’ opening ceremony, there were many concerns about how spectators would make it to the Games. Officials, busy managing the influx of athletes and media representation, were dealing with an already hectic week. In order to address this, they organized a committee to provide additional bus services to and from the airport. So, thankfully, travelers were able to still make it to the Games.
