The Russia-Ukraine conflict has been occurring for a very long time, due to Russia’s desire for Ukrainian land, but the current ongoing war officially started on February 24th, 2022. As of May 2026, the Russia-Ukraine War has escalated, with significant attacks ahead of a potential ceasefire. This ongoing war not only impacts the two nations involved but also highlights the growing intensity of modern warfare.

A Ukrainian missile and drone strike hit Russia’s Chuvashia region, killing two people and injuring dozens, in what Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s President, said was a targeted attack on “Military Industrial States.” Russia’s government reported that hundreds of Ukrainian drones had been intercepted by Russian land, and their security had been strengthened ahead of Russia’s May 9th Victory Parade in Moscow. Following this incident, Russia has started scaling back events, and its government sent out warnings of possible communication restrictions due to safety concerns. Both sides announced short ceasefires tied to the holiday, but fighting continues in Ukraine, where Russian drones and missiles have killed and injured civilians across the country.
These Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine killed at least 22 people and injured more than 80 just before both sides announced a temporary ceasefire. Cities such as Kramatorsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Chernihiv received the most damage from the attacks. Zelensky called the timing “Utter Cynicism,” meaning that Russia had the power to stop the attacks at any time, while Ukraine had to begin its own ceasefire earlier. This is a constant ongoing conflict, where ceasefire proposals are extremely short and limited, seen in Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian military and oil facilities.

Following Russia’s attacks, Ukraine launched many drone strikes against multiple Russian oil facilities on May 3rd. Hitting the major Baltic Sea port of Primorsk, Ukraine, targeted tankers as part of an effort in order to weaken Russia’s war economy. Zelensky said that the attacks damaged key facilities and that Ukraine successfully disabled military-related ships, though Russian officials did not confirm any of this. Despite the constant call for ceasefires, fighting continues on both sides, with Russian drone strikes killing civilians and damaging Ukrainian facilities, while Ukrainian drones cause casualties and damage inside Russia. Both nations also reported constant losses of their drone and missile supply, highlighting the ongoing intensity of the war. Overall, the continued strikes by both nations show how the conflict is escalating, with both sides targeting facilities and causing civilian harm, making peace and ceasefires extremely difficult to achieve.
