Filming At Marymount: Good Or Bad?

Sarah Ambrose '20, Staff Writer

For about one week, Marymount transformed into “St. Sebastian High School” as a film crew, actors, and trailers filled our campus to film an upcoming Netflix television series, The Politician. To outsiders, Marymount may seem like the perfect place for a set. It is in a nice location and offers plenty of space for extra trailers and craft services. Though Sunset can be busy, Marymount is quiet enough between classes for a film crew not to have to worry about noise disrupting a take.

Moreover, Marymount will, of course, benefit from the money that they have received from the filming. Aside from this, students are certainly glad to catch glimpses of famous actors, such as Ben Platt. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at filmmaking, which is a pretty rare opportunity.

Despite these pros, the filming crew and their equipment inconvenienced us as we tried to continue with our normal school schedule during the filming. Green benches and signs replaced our signs all around campus, and trailers occupied the parking lot. We had to avoid areas where the show was filming, including the dining hall and senior courtyard. We did not exactly know what areas of the school we were not allowed to be in during the filming. It made many of us feel like visitors on our own campus. When walking past filming areas, we had to stay quiet in order to not disturb the shooting. But in reality, the people filming were the ones being a disturbance. While the filming at Marymount was a fun experience, I would not welcome another film crew on our campus.
