Yes! In fact, they are. Scientists are still in the beginning stages of creating the infrastructure for flying cars, but a reality with flying cars is in sight. Autonomous cars have already become a part of our society as seen with Waymos. Technology that includes navigation, lightweight materials (carbon fiber) and advanced propulsion systems, drone technology and electric and hybrid engines are setting the scene for future flying cars.
Some challenges that are to be considered with this advancement are safety, infrastructure, cost and pollution. Safety is a key consideration with flying cars. Licensing, accident prevention and air traffic control will most definitely need to be addressed. Figuring out how to manage cities and areas that would have traffic management problems, and implementing charging stations would be large changes to the infrastructure. This leads to the cost of the whole process. The cars themselves are going to be expensive and with all the infrastructure that has to be changed the prices will be adding up. The noise pollution and energy consumption must also be taken into account, especially in high density areas.

Flying cars are not yet mainstream but are most definitely possible. Finding the framework to integrate this into our society will be difficult but doable considering our advancements with drones, self-driving cars and airplanes. Get ready to buckle in and take off!
