The Louvre Museum, a worldly and iconic art institution, was considered super secure and unbreakable until now. It has both state of the art surveillance and dedicated security guards, and it seems impossible to think that such a major heist could have gone off without a hitch. I think the ease of the situation prompts some major concerns: Was the Louvre robbery too easy? And can just anyone pull off such a successful heist?

Let’s look a bit closer. This heist, performed in pure daylight, could have been completely avoidable if only both security cameras were working near the site. Due to the lack of camera surveillance, the alarms were sent off to the wrong place, sending the police to the wrong spot. This allowed the thieves to slide away in the nick of time. Other modern security measures like more resistant glass or better communication between guards could have really prevented this loss of the famed jewels. How did one of the world’s most visited museums prove to be so poorly protected?

So far, suspects have been arrested but the jewels are still missing. The burglars’ use of angle grinders to snatch a total of eight items that amount to a pretty penny of $102 million dollars baffles nearly everyone who hears. Considering the Oceans 8-like situation, it seems that any regular citizen could plan and follow through with a heist. It’s true that heists like these require significant planning and insider knowledge. The thieves also must be versed in technical skills, networking and must be able to calculate the risk versus rewards of the situation. However, no security system is foolproof and a key takeaway is that with enough determination, it seems quite possible to pull off a heist. This is a reminder to all about the importance of being vigilant and knowing that there are limits to even the best security systems.
