California is a gorgeous state, but most people don’t know just how stunning it is. There are hundreds of astonishing forests and small coastal towns throughout our state, but most people haven’t thought about visiting them. In order to share some of this glory, I’ve curated the perfect spring break roadtrip that includes some of these coastal towns and gorgeous forests.
The first stop on this roadtrip is Solvang, a small Danish town located near Santa Barbara. Solvang is approximately two and a half hours away from Los Angeles, but the coastal drive there is absolutely stunning. This historic “Danish Capital of America” is the ideal location to embrace Danish culture, whether that’s through visiting its authentic bakeries or admiring its traditional European-style architecture. Not only is this historic town renowned for embracing Dutch culture, but it is also known for its enchanting boutiques, iconic photo spots, and cozy cafes. If you decide to spend the night in Solvang, I recommend that you stay at the Wine Valley Inn & Cottages. This endearing Inn offers a central location, charming atmosphere, and old-world appeal.

After three hours of driving from Solvang to Big Sur, I recommend you take a pit stop at McWay Falls. McWay Falls, a gorgeous waterfall on the coast of Big Sur, is known for its unique tidefall that flows directly into the Pacific Ocean. Since this waterfall is located directly on the ocean, it is a popular destination for swimming, photography, and relaxing.

Once you’ve spent time at McWay Falls, your next stop in Big Sur should be the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Located along the coast, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is characterized by its large redwood trees, ocean scenery, open meadows, and many hiking opportunities.

If you find yourself wanting to spend the night in Big Sur, I recommend staying at the Big Sur Campground and Cabins or Glen Oaks Big Sur. Both locations offer a naturistic, cabin-like atmosphere, but your choice depends on the experience you would like to have. The Big Sur Campground and Cabins is a very traditional cabin-style stay where you can have a campfire with your friends and family, whereas the Glen Oaks Big Sur provides more of a hotel feel with private cottages and a restaurant.

The third and final stop on this California roadtrip is Carmel-by-the-Sea. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a coastal town known for its Comstock-style architecture, white-sand beaches, and romantic atmosphere. This small coastal town prohibits chain restaurants, meaning that every meal you enjoy here will be one to remember. Carmel-by-the-Sea is an extremely walkable town, allowing visitors to visit their overwhelming amount of art galleries, beaches, and fairytale-esc boutiques during a short stroll. Carmel-by-the-Sea is definitely a memorable destination that everyone should visit at least once.

Some additional places you can stop at along the way, if you so choose, include: Mendocino, San Ysidro Ranch, and the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve hike.
