This past summer’s 2024 Olympics held in Paris was remarkable, from the opening ceremony to every sporting event. Viewers were also gifted with many honorable moments to remember.
In women’s gymnastics, Rebeca Andrade from Brazil won first place for her floor routine. Two athletes from the United States, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, received second and third place, and decided to give props to Andrade’s amazing routine. They both bowed down, wanting Andrade to have her moment, displaying sincere acts of sportsmanship and honor.
This next photo shows the celebration between the couple Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall- both track and field athletes. Tara had just secured a gold medal in the women’s long jump, and immediately ran to her supportive husband. Shortly after the Olympics, Hunter Woodhall won a gold medal in the men’s 400 meter race in the Paralympics, in which his wife supported him as well.
These images capture the medal ceremony of the women’s artistic gymnastics event of three athletes- two from Italy and one from China. Alice D’Amato and Manila Esposito both engaged in the long-lived tradition of biting their medals. Zhou Yaqin saw this gesture, and decided to partake in it as well, showing a wholesome moment between the three gymnasts.
The sports were not the only spectacular contribution to this year’s Olympics; an extraordinary moment was Celine Dion’s performance in the opening ceremony. Dion sang “Hymne à l’amour”, marking a grand return after not publicly performing since 2020. Dion came back after her struggles with a neurological disorder, reviving her passion for singing.
These are only four of many noteworthy aspects of the Olympics. Every four years, countries from around the world come together to simply play sports, which may not seem like much, but its significance is substantial. These summer games eliminate discrimination by solely advocating for fair play and respect. The Olympics also embrace the love that athletes and viewers have for their country and culture. These four moments truly embody the Olympic Spirit. There’s much excitement for the 2028 Olympics, which will be in Los Angeles!
