Hispanic heritage, the theme for the month of October, begins on September 15th and lasts a month. These dates were chosen for the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month because it honors the anniversary of the independence of several Latin countries in the 1800s. Although independence wasn’t achieved on September 15th, it marks the day of el Grito de Dolores. This historical event took place the morning of September 16, 1810 where a Catholic priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, rang a bell in the church where he gave a call for arms, which issued the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.

National Hispanic Heritage month honors Latinos living throughout America and acknowledges their adversities as a whole. It recognizes the contributions Latinos have integrated into the communities. Many individuals celebrate the achievements of Hispanics through activities such as: community festivals, ceremonies, concerts, and educational activities run within school.

The “Latinos in Hollywood” Photo Exhibit honors the Latino film culture in Los Angeles. This event takes place during Hispanic Heritage Month to reiterate the importance the Latino community has in cities in America, such as Los Angeles. The event takes place up until October 15, 2017 at Plaza de la Raza in Los Angeles. On October 7th, many in Los Angeles come together to celebrate at the Latino LA Festival. This festival contains a day filled with Hispanic culture, such as performances and food to enrich and remind those of the influences in America. This event takes place at Wilmington Waterfront Park and is a one-day event.

Despite ethnicity, there are many ways one can partake in celebrating the many accomplishments Hispanics have made in the US that are in our very own backyard. For more information on events to take part in Los Angeles, visit Latino Heritage LA online.
