Sailors Persevere In Crew

The Marina Aquatic Center club crew team has had a successful year with many hard, enduring practices that have paid off in great triumphs. Marymount High School promotes the MAC program to bring together interested members such as Melissa Schem 14’, Brooke Stroyke 14’, India Jennings 16’, Abby Keith 16’, and Amy Mora 16’. Crew is a very physically and mentally demanding sport, and it requires a lot of commitment: every day after school and every Sunday afternoon, the team practices together in order to improve their skills and continue their winning streak.

The competition differs throughout each season; during the fall, the team races 5K’s, and in the spring they race 2K’s.  In order to get ready for these competitions, the team has to do a lot of specific training. For example, the members train with the erg, or, as quoted by India Jennings, “the torturing machine.” Jennings states that the erg is “a rowing machine that uses a fan and chain on land that records the time it will take you to row 500 meters, which is also called your ‘split’ time.”  The preparation for crew does not end at practices; team members also need to maintain a very nutritious diet. Abby Keith says, “You need to have twice as much protein as carbs and lay off the saturated fat and drink lots of water.”  All of this preparation and commitment has paid off because “the girls on our team have done well and have medaled at the Head of Charles, the biggest race in the United States”. India Jennings also commented, “So far we are doing great and still training for the spring season”. The crew team is heading in the right direction for the spring season, and welcomes new members to strengthen the team.
