Every year from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. This time is dedicated to celebrating the culture, history, and contributions of Latin Americans (including those from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, South and Central America). In 1968, the United States dedicated a week to Hispanic Heritage, later expanding it to a month in 1988. In today’s culture, Hispanic Heritage Month is more impactful than ever before.

Today, Hispanic Heritage Month focuses more on celebrating Hispanic culture rather than acknowledging famous figures or spreading awareness through posts. People celebrate by listening to music, eating authentic cuisine, and attending cultural festivals. While this is important, it is crucial to focus on issues impacting the Hispanic community. Fighting for the rights of individuals in the Hispanic community and supporting issues that the community aligns with, such as educational access, healthcare, and immigration reform, is highly impactful and necessary to truly celebrate Hispanic communities.

Especially in an era of social media and misinformation, celebrating the month by sharing stories and struggles of Hispanics can better connect the community and allies. Recognizing the obstacles and factors Hispanics have overcome involves examining their history, which fosters understanding and awareness of diversity. It is essential to keep your actions effective rather than performative. The saying, “actions speak louder than words,” has never been truer in current society. This Hispanic Heritage Month, remember to celebrate the culture in a way that recognizes its part in creating a diverse and inclusive community.
