In a world where diversity and inclusion are more important than ever, Marymount continues to take steps toward building a welcoming community for everyone. Leading that effort is the Student Diversity Awareness Board (SDAB), a group dedicated to celebrating differences and promoting academic diversity. It achieves this distinction through inclusive activities and meaningful community involvement, such as weekly community presentations on cultural joy and various thought talks. Through these activities, they work to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment at Marymount. SDAB is a key component in ensuring that every student feels like a valued member of the Marymount community. SDAB works to support the mission of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, “that all may have life and have it full,” by advocating for social justice, promoting equality for everyone, and fostering a diverse and inclusive community.

SDAB also takes advantage of certain celebrations or holidays to inform students of different cultural celebrations, holidays, or world events. During National Diabetes Awareness Month, they hosted a thought-provoking talk on diabetes and how health disparities disproportionately impact individuals with diabetes. At the beginning of December, they hosted a Holiday Celebrations Talk, where they highlighted different celebrations held during the month, including Hanukkah, Kwanza, and Bodhi Day. They hosted a thought talk featuring African American Music and its connection to American history and culture. These events are just some of the ways they promote understanding of different cultures and issues. Overall, SDAB works to build a more inclusive community and celebrate diversity.

The Student Diversity Awareness Board plays a vital role in shaping Marymount into a more inclusive and understanding community. Through its events, discussions, and dedication to promoting equality, SDAB not only educates students about cultural awareness and social issues but also brings the Marymount mission to life by ensuring that every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. Their continued efforts remind the community that diversity is not just something to recognize—but something to celebrate and uphold every day.
