Every year, upperclassmen involved in acting (whether that be with the Marymount Players, DTASC, or acting class) have the wonderful opportunity to go to the Getty Villa to see an outdoor theater performance. This year, four juniors went: Isabel Beran, Victoria Castle, Willa Dohrmann, and Allison Knapp, along with Mr. Renaud and Ms. Wexler, and they all had an amazing time! This was a modern retelling of Oedipus Rex set to Elvis Presley music, called Oedipus the King, Mama!

The show took a new spin on an ancient play to make it even more exciting and fun. It was put on by the Troubadour Theater Company, aka “the Troubies.”

This theatrical group is based in LA and has done many other exciting re-tellings of plays old and new. They have written some of their own plays, too, and have performed in multiple theaters. The Troubies have been around since 1995, have won multiple awards, and have performed charitably for many important causes. The Marymount students got to go to a special viewing of the show, which was mostly for college students. Marymount has been able to attend for years due to Marymount’s dedication to the performing arts.
The Getty Villa has an outdoor theater recreating an amphitheater from Greece, which enabled the actors’ echos to be heard well by the audience. This show was utterly hilarious and everyone was filled with many laughs and giggles. There was also a Q&A afterwards which allowed students to ask questions, learn about the behind-the-scenes, and find out more about the Troubies and their history of performing. The actors were keen to share their knowledge with younger students and answered many questions from people throughout the whole theater.
Overall, this was an incredible experience for the Marymount students. Amazing memories were made, and everyone bonded over the spirited performance and their shared love of theater. We can’t wait to go back to the Getty Villa to see a new show next year which is sure to impress and will leave more smiles on our faces!
